Wire To Wire
The Walter Merrick Story |
Walter Merrick is unquestionably one of the most colorful and
influential Quarter Horse breeders and racehorse men of all
time. Born into a western Oklahoma farm family in 1911, he
began his working career in the mid-1920s as an open range
cowboy and rough-string rider.
|
As a
young Depression-era family man, Merrick struggled to eke out
a living as a dollar-a-day ranch hand. In 1940, he became one
of the founding members of the American Quarter Horse
Association and parlayed a band of one stallion and five mares
into a horseracing dynasty. His discovery and promotion of an
unknown, unproven Thoroughbred stallion named Three Bars in
the early 1950s altered the course of Quarter Horse evolution
and led to the creation of his own $30 million line of
sprinters.
Merrick’s influence on the American Quarter
Horse extends into every corner of the industry—from racing to
rodeo; from halter to cutting. Here, for the first time, is
his authorized biography—complete with all the first-hand
stories and photographs that chronicle a lifetime of effort
and achievement.
